CS36-FM Spike System Installation

The CS36-FM Flush Mount Traffic Controller has been carefully engineered to address the challenges of managing directional traffic flow in busy commercial environments. Its construction prioritizes safety and efficiency, making it a valuable addition to high-traffic areas. This guide provides an in-depth, step-by-step approach to installing your CS36-FM unit. Whether you are preparing for your first installation or refreshing your knowledge, this resource will help you achieve proper setup and operation, enhancing the performance and reliability of your traffic control system for years to come.

Materials Needed

  • Saw-cut equipment for installation trench
  • Shovels
  • Three (3) concrete blocks (8" x 8" x 16")
  • 12 to 16 bags of premix cement
  • Allen wrench
  • 3' straight edge
  • Trowel for finishing cement
  • Bag of pea gravel

Step 1: Site Selection

Before you begin the installation, ensure the selected site meets the following conditions:

  • The location should be flat to minimize water drainage into the unit.
  • The unit should be installed where vehicles approach and cross at 90 degrees.
  • Ensure the speed across the controller does not exceed 5 mph. If necessary, install speed bumps or signs to control speed.
  • Position the unit away from pedestrian traffic or restrict pedestrian access in the area.

Step 2: Preparing the Trench

Follow these steps to prepare the installation site:

  1. Saw-cut a trench measuring at least 36" wide and 11" deep.
  2. Ensure the trench length is 12" greater than the CS36-FM frame length to allow for proper placement.
  3. Place pea gravel at the base of the trench to aid in drainage.
  4. Position two concrete blocks (8" x 8" x 16") inside the trench to serve as the foundation for the CS36-FM frame.

Step 3: Installing the Frame

Once the trench is prepared, proceed with the frame installation:

  1. Remove the top plate bolts and set the three top plates aside.
  2. Carefully position the CS36-FM frame atop the two concrete blocks.
  3. Use a 3' straight edge to ensure the frame is ½" to ¾" above the asphalt finish grade.

Step 4: Pouring the Cement

Filling the trench with cement requires precision to ensure the longevity of the unit:

  1. Pour cement into the trench up to the bottom of the CS36-FM frame.
  2. Ensure no cement enters the frame above the bottom flange, as this will void warranties and damage the unit.
  3. Fill the trench evenly around the frame until the cement is level with the top of the frame and asphalt.

Important: Avoid allowing cement to fall into the concrete block holes; these are necessary for drainage.

Step 5: Finalizing the Installation

After the cement has set, complete the following steps:

  1. Fill the concrete block holes with pea gravel to prevent debris accumulation.
  2. Reinstall the top plates, ensuring alignment with the container box holes. A screwdriver may help with alignment.
  3. Securely tighten all top plate bolts to avoid misalignment of the teeth and ensure proper operation.

Maintenance Tips

Regular maintenance ensures your CS36-FM operates smoothly for years to come:

  • Inspect the unit periodically for debris and clean as needed.
  • Ensure the drainage channel remains unblocked.
  • Apply a light coat of waterproof grease to the springs if heavy rusting occurs.
